About Kool Cigarettes

It was the first menthol cigarette brand to achieve nationwide distribution in the United States. The brand used Willie the Penguin as its mascot from the 1930s through the 1960s, featuring him in ads as a doctor, soldier, chef, and various other characters. By the early 1970s, Kool controlled roughly 10 percent of the entire U.S. cigarette market, an extraordinary share for any single brand.

Kool held the top position in menthol cigarettes for decades until Newport surpassed it in the 1990s. Brown and Williamson was acquired by R.J. Reynolds in 2004. When Reynolds merged with Lorillard in 2015, Kool was sold to Imperial Tobacco as part of antitrust concessions and is now manufactured and distributed by ITG Brands LLC. Outside the United States, Kool is sold by British American Tobacco.
